Distinguished Achievement in Neurosurgery at KMCT MCH

Neurosurgery wing at the KMCT MEDICAL College Hospital have successfully done ‘Anterior Screw Fixation’ surgery on a 53-year-old man.

The patient, Azeez, hails from Calicut, met with an accident three months back. He was a known case of neck sprain diagnosed by three eminent Orthopaedic surgeons practising in Multispecialty Hospitals in Calicut. When the pain turned out to be intolerable, Azeez’s son took him to KMCT MCH and sought medical support at the Neurosurgery branch.

Dr. Bimal Govind [Head of Neurosurgery Dept- KMCT Medical College Hospital] conducted regular examinations & tests and identified- Type II-Odontoid fracture [breaking of high cervical vertebra bone].

Meticulously, diagnosing the case, the team ruled out conservative treatment and recommended surgical intervention, as there are clear chances of patient returning to the normal life.

“Surgical intervention- especially Anterior Screw fixation- is said to be an extremely risky choice, but we proved that it is not that much risky, if the diagnosis and healing are accurate”, according to Dr Bimal Govind.

The surgery, which lasted for five hours, was conducted by a team consisting of Dr. Bimal Govind (MS & Mch), Dr. Sunny Alex (MD)- Anaesthetist, Dr. Sonu Kumar and nurses.

It is already two weeks passed after the surgery; the pain is as not as severe as before and he is on the verge of returning to normal life.
